Personally, I’m glad to see another store like ZARA come to downtown Seattle because I feel like it gives shoppers more options for ready-to-wear off the runway apparel and also now I don’t have to travel to Vancouver, BC to purchase their clothes.

Portland Style interview with Bob Davis

February 3, 2014
#PDXANTONIO

During my journeys walking around downtown portland, I found some time to interview the experienced Bob Davis, about Portland style and how people put things together. Bob Davis can be at imogene + willie, located right outside the pearl district (Downtown Portland’s shopping area).

Who are you and how long have you been in the Portland fashion scene?
My name is Bob Davis. I have lived in portland almost 8 years. I moved here to direct and buy for a local apparel retailer so I have been in the scene from the start.

How would you define your personal style?
I would define my style as a mix of classic, casual, vintage inspired. My foundation is a tee shirt, boots and jeans, then i build from there.

How would you describe the Portland fashion scene?
The portland fashion scene is as diverse as the residents but inspired by 3 distinct influences; the outdoors(think patagonia), sport(think nike) and rugged individualism(think filson).

In your opinion are there any trends shoppers should be looking out for?
In general I am seeing a DIY, mashup of vintage, rugged outdoor and tailored suiting. Also wool is important, fashionable technical outerwear, boots and denim.

Travel Essentials: The Timbuk2 Aviator Travel Backpack

January 27, 2014
Timbuk2 Aviator hike

I like my travel bags to have both style and ample capacity. The Timbuk2 Aviator Travel Backpack is the essential bag to take with you for small out town getaways or quick weekend trips. One of my favorite qualities about this bag is the rain fly bag covering attached which gives it a bit of ruggedness during those wet days and protects your mobile devices like laptops, cameras, or mobile phones.

What are the features?

*Rain fly for soggy days live in its own dedicated pocket.
*20″ (28.5L) ample capacity can be carried on.
*Laptop pocket fits up to 17″ MacBook Pro
*Converts from suitcase to backpack with stowaway padded straps and removable hip belt.
*Expandable top compartment for quarantining shoes and toiletries.
*Full-zip opening main compartment provides the easy access of a duffel.
*Two external zip pockets for smartphone, wallet, and passport.
*Fabric reinforced tarpaulin and durable nylon fabric construction.
*External compression straps for cinching or expanding.
*Padded, ventilated back panel for a comfy, dry carry.

Style trend: Mixing patterns

January 6, 2014
Mens layering fashion

Mixing patterns can sometimes leave the most skilled style expert filled with anxiety. Polka dot, plaid or stripes mixed together the wrong way can lead to a absolute mess but done correctly, it can lead to genius!

One tip that I’ve learned in mixing patterns is to think “small and big”. Small patterns like polka dots on the inside and big and bold patterns on the outside. Here are two examples on how you could layer mixed patterns.

Interview with Butch Stevenson – ian boutique stylist

November 11, 2013

I first met Butch Stevenson years ago when I was starting the Art Institute of Seattle. Back then I was impressed by the knowledge he possessed in styling and fashion. Butch has worked in different downtown Seattle clothing boutiques for over 10yrs and has acuminated a lot of knowledge about the Seattle fashion scene. I recently reconnected with him at ian (Seattle boutique located downtown Seattle) and decided to interview him and share some of his knowledge with all of my readers.

Who are you and how long have you been with the shop?

My name is Butch Stevenson, manager at ian. I’ve been with the store for
 almost 9 years.

Why do you enjoy fashion?

I guess I’ve been interested in fashion since I was a kid, watching Style
with Elsa Klensch on CNN with my aunt Cauleen Williams. I would also design
clothes in my spiral binder at school.

I love fashion because it’s a way of self-expression. To see what a designer
is into that moment and see how they interpret it into a collection always
intrigues me. Some designers have a similar vision season-to-season but
reimagining it so it becomes interesting again. Ralph Lauren, Daiki Suzuki
of Engineered Garments, Junya Watanabe, and Brunello Cuccinelli are masters
of that and kill it every season. In the store I always look forward to what
Levi’s Made & Crafted does. This season was brilliant with the texture and
colorful prints.

I’m actually more interested in personal style and how people put things
together. It’s interesting when two individuals can have the same garment
and see it in a different way. I always love to see the end result.

I’m also really interested in ‘fashionless’ fashion. You know, the clothes
that people stray from because it’s not hip enough or too “out there”. You
know that red trench that was hanging in the sale rack that makes you wonder
who would buy it? Hi there! I love those pieces! I always find ways to make
it work; and if it doesn’t come to me right then, I keep it in the closet
until it comes to me.

How would you describe Seattle fashion scene?

Safe!!! I have to give props to some of those people, though for stepping up
their game and to those who always are never afraid to bring it (shout outs
to Liana Kegley and Joshua David Meacham at Barneys, Max Jarkow at Mario’s);
but for the most part people here are afraid to go against the grain even a
little bit. But I do see it getting better…

Are there any trends shoppers should be looking out for?

Floral prints are going to be a thing this spring and I think you can do it
in smaller doses (ie. accessories) if you can’t picture yourself in a floral
anorak! My advice to people though is if you don’t want to be too trendy is
just make sure your clothes fit correctly. Fit is key. I see way too many
guys wear the wrong size (usually too big) thinking they’re hiding
something; but all it does is draw attention to what they’re hiding! Tighten
up!

Men’s Fashion Trend Fall 2013: 90’s Grunge Look

October 24, 2013

The 90’s grunge look is one of my favorite Men’s fashion trend for Fall 2013. 90’s grunge includes clothes like, flannel shirts, acid wash jeans, denim jackets, wool sweaters, Converse shoes, toques, boots and black leather jackets. This low-maintenance look will give you a little edge without having to try too hard. The grunge look also gives you tons of layers to take on and off for cold fall situations. If you need more inspiration, think of Kurt Cobain or the 1992 comedy movie Singles. Ahh I love Seattle in the fall, it smells like teen spirit!
