Midtown Detroit

Midtown Detroit

Midtown Detroit is located just north of Downtown and is one of the most booming areas in Detroit. The area has boomed because of all the new developments that have been popping up the last few years. Midtown has tons of art galleries, restaurants, museums and trendy boutiques all in walk-able distance. The area seems very community based so there is always something going on like poetry reading or misc performances.

Some of my favorite spots in Midtown are located in the Cass and Canfield (or Midtown North Cass) area. Two of favorite boutiques from the area are called Shinola and sister their store Willys. Shinola and Willys are connected to each other not only in area but both only sell goods from America. Willys has an assortment of brands including FILSON, STEVEN, ALAN, MOLLUSK, CLARE V, while Shinola focuses on leather goods, hand crafted bikes and fine watches. Pictures from inside are above.

Notable food mentions include:
Avalon – serving up Michigan-made and organic goodies since 1997
La feria – Spanish Tapas

After a 3 year break, Seattle Fashion Week is back. Tonight was the first meet and greet for the newly revamped Seattle Fashion Week. Although it was only a small sneak peek, the staff did mention the runway date of March 4-7th, their location at Seattle Center Exhibition Hall and that it will be featuring mostly ready to wear clothing.

Today I got a chance to meet Shiro Kashiba from Shiro Sushi. Shiro Kashiba is known for awing Seattle sushi enthusiasts with his sushi mastering skills. Although he’s recently retired, Shiro demonstrated his sushi preparation and technique at the Pike Place Market’s Atrium Kitchen. During the demonstration I also received a signed copy of his book. If you’re into sushi like I am you should check it out. The book contains recipes, images and illustrations of Shiro throughout his life. Shiro: Wit, Wisdom & Recipes from a Sushi Pioneer

Seattle’s new foodie hub

October 30, 2014
Pioneer square

Pioneer Square has always been a tourist hot spot for t-shirts, magnets and other Seattle souvenirs but recently the area has been getting some noticeable upgrades. Dubded Seattle’s new foodie hub, PSQ restaurants like London Plane, Pizzeria Gabbiano, Quality Athletics and Caffe Umbria are really making some waves. Although I couldn’t eat everywhere, I did try out a few spots.

Peppermill Turkey, Sundried Tomatoes, Provolone Cheese, Parsley on Baguette from Caffe Umbria.

Pizzeria Gabbiano pizza sold by the kilo.

London Plane Chicken soup with thick cut bread.

Hello Robin

October 15, 2014

If you love sweets like I do you then Seattle’s Hello Robin is the place to go. Not only does Hello Robin serve fresh, warm and soft baked cookies but they also serve Seattle’s very own Molly Moons Ice Cream. Robin and Moons become a wonderful combination when you order the Hello Robin ice cream sandwich pictured above. I was lucky enough to grab one of the legendary Mackles’more (Named after Seattle rapper Macklemore) cookies right as they were coming out of the oven. The Mackles’more cookie is made with chocolate chip cookie, graham cracker, and marshmallows. So Good!

Get oversized! The Oversized Blazer is a good look for fall. Paired it with a skinny jean to accentuate blazer size and you have a look with attitude and style.

The Nautical look

September 28, 2014

I love to squeeze out the last bit out of summer before it runs into fall. Today a group of friends and I went out on the docks to cruise the Pacific and enjoy the sun. I’m lucky to have friends with boats so I don’t have to spend the money on one. Here’s one way to get “the Nautical Look” without dropping anchor on a new boat or tons of money in department stores.

Kayaking in the Puget Sound

September 11, 2014

Ballard Kayak invited me out to enjoy their Discovery Point Kayak & Hiking Tour. As this was my first time Kayaking, I was a bit nervous. My guide gave me a brief training lesson on the beach and afterwards we were off! The 3.5 hr tour starts at Golden Gardens and continues on to Discovery Point. Once at Discovery Point, we went on a short hike to Discovery Bluff to get a view of the Olympic Mountains. Before heading back to Golden Gardens we enjoyed a gourmet lunch and paddled through Shilshole Marina. During the trek back I got to see a few animals like eagles and sleepy floating seals. My experience with Ballard Kayak was fantastic and I recommend it to any one who enjoys being out on the water.

I took my GoPro along with me so you can experience the tour as I did. I hope you enjoy it!
